In case you missed my excitement and a billion photos on Facebook and Instagram; I can announce that we have moved up to the beautiful Coolangatta on the Gold Coast! I seem to be following the waves north and always seeking sunshine, salt and sand. We arrived on Monday this week and it already feels like home.

We’ve been doing some exploring of our local cafes as our daily coffee is quite important to us (although we have an automatic Miele coffee machine in the new apartment – it’s not the same); as is a delicious and healthy cafe breakfast once or twice a week. So far, all of the local places in Coolangatta haven’t disappointed (but we have lots more to try before we choose a favourite).

It was perfect timing when a lovely lady called Jacqui reached out to me via a mutual friend, and invited myself and John to come for coffee and breakfast up at her new cafe The Department of Coffee in Palm Beach. Being a breakfast lover and always keen to find great cafes, I said we would love to! Jacqui hails from Ballarat, Victoria – so as a fellow Victorian, I am happy to say that we Melbourne gals know good food and good coffee!

So we visited The Department of Coffee on Saturday morning and were greeted with big smiles and a very cool fit out (quite Melbourne-laneway-esque). I was happy to find yet another Gold Coast cafe offering not only gluten free bread and plenty of gluten free menu options, but also a variety of non-dairy milks like almond, soy and coconut.

It took us a while to decide but we eventually ended up with the Big Breakfast (toast, poached eggs, hash brown, mushrooms, sausage, rocket, avocado, tomato) and a latte for John; the Green Royal (GF toast, poached eggs, spinach, tomatoes, drizzled with basil oil) and a cold drip coffee for me; plus two Green Kick juices to round it out nicely.

Both of us were very satisfied as the food was absolutely delicious and the coffee was a very high standard – best we’ve had up here so far (as you would expect from the name). It’s also the first cold drip I’ve found up here, so it’s great to know I can still get my paws on that. The basil oil was a big hit, the spinach was lovely and fresh and the eggs were poached perfectly, just check out that yolk porn (highly important factor!). Next time I’ll be trying the Acai bowl (of course) and some of the other juices – and elderflower one caught my eye.

Jacqui and Travis bought the cafe about 4 months ago and have really created a wonderful vibe with a menu that’s got enough variety but focuses on good quality ingredients. I will also definitely need to sample some of the variety of gluten free and dairy free raw treats in the window! *Drool*. We had a great chin wag with Jacqui and Trevor over a coffee and these two are just lovely people. You can feel that as soon as you walk in and all of their staff are equally pleasant and chatty.

The Department of Coffee lives up to it’s name, but it’s food is also not to be ignored with such yummy dishes, great prices and plenty of options for us with various food intolerances – we’re looking forward to popping in to see Jacqui and Trevor (and their coffee) again soon.
